Extrusion blow molding and stretch blow molding are both used to manufacture hollow plastic containers. However, they differ in raw materials, forming methods, product design, and typical applications.

What is the difference between extrusion blow molding and stretch blow molding?

Extrusion blow molding melts plastic and extrudes it into a hollow tube called a parison. A mold closes around the parison, and compressed air inflates it against the mold cavity.

This process is suitable for producing bottles, jerry cans, chemical drums, toys, automotive ducts, and containers with integrated handles. Common materials include HDPE, LDPE, PP, and PVC.

What Is Stretch Blow Molding?

Stretch blow molding starts with an injection-molded preform rather than an extruded parison. The preform is reheated, stretched vertically with a stretch rod, and inflated horizontally inside the mold.

This biaxial stretching improves material distribution, transparency, strength, and pressure resistance. Stretch blow molding is mainly used for PET beverage bottles, water bottles, juice bottles, carbonated drink bottles, and cosmetic containers.

Which Process Should You Choose?

Choose extrusion blow molding when producing HDPE or PP containers, irregular hollow products, large containers, or bottles with handles. Choose stretch blow molding when manufacturing lightweight and transparent PET bottles that require good strength, accurate neck dimensions, or pressure resistance.
